Hoe Nhai Sugar Pigeon Hotpot
Pigeon hot pot
An unintended consequence of having an over-the-top dining menu at the local pub!
Nam Duong Tuu Quan is more famous for pigeon hotpot than country wine. As one may soon notice, a large number of patrons at 21 Hoe Nhai are female, which is very unusual for the local pubs which are often crowded with rambunctious men. They come for the birds!
The highlight of the pigeon hotpot is the very liquid porridge broth, which has been simmered for a long time with some kind of bird before. Most other hot pot dishes don’t use porridge, and that just means two birds one stone. The hot porridge, punctuated with the sweetness of the marrow, and the tender white meat, mingled in all the sensuous glamor of herbs, vegetables, and mushrooms, making one just want to dive in. all that deliciousness, if it weren’t for the bubbling bubbles that irritate noses that can’t reach far enough. Or at least want to devour them all!
Either way, it will likely be an experience never to be forgotten.
Four diners can chip for an estimated total of about 350,000 VND for a pot. We doubt that you will eat too little!

These are hard to come by in Hanoi, and when they do, the original is still dominant. Street vendors in Khuong Thuong alley, near Truong Chinh Boulevard, have more than 40 years of serving strange noodle dishes. That was the time when bombs and bullets flew over people and snails!
In addition to the attractive spicy and sour broth, snail hotpot also has very interesting ingredients. There are snails (!!!), dumplings, wontons and rolls, all made from crawling creatures. The hot pot dish also features local fried tofu, green bananas and slices of pork belly. They combine to create an unmistakable dish with aromas and cravings like no other.
One pot will probably cost about 300,000vnd for all four of you. However, it’s certainly not cheap, as this is more or less farmer’s food.

Fish and indeed hot pot are quite popular in the South, but it has only been brought to the table in the North recently. Mudfish hotpot has a fairly stable loyal fan base, but it’s rare in Hanoi, so it’s quite strange to some people. One of the few restaurants that can do that is Lau Ba Sau, 65 Van Cao. No need to go any further to enjoy the authentic taste, because even the name has a Southern accent!
A special feature of mudskipper hotpot is the presence of endemic river leaves (Aganonerion polymorphum – editor) creating a mild bitter but strange aroma. Its broth is a sweet and sour mix. The mudskipper itself is small but tender and the meat is very tender. Fish is often soaked in very delicious broth, creating an irresistible craving. The indispensable vegetables served with this hot pot are marjoram and thinly sliced banana flowers. Water spinach has also proven to be a great supplement.
With 350,000 VND a pot of dumplings, this is quite a high price, especially when each person can only serve 2 people. But on second thought, since all the ingredients were shipped from the southern lands, it was a reasonable fee.

The small road turns off the famous Thanh Nien street, running along the shore of Truc Bach lake, which got its name from, known by many for its famous specialty. Happy party!
